For thousands of South Indians settled in the United
States, Canada, Europe and United Kingdom, the taste
of ethnic food cooked back home should be the last thing
they should be missing from home.
Thanks to the enterprise shown by over
a dozen food exporters from Kerala, masal dosas, chuttney,
idli-sambar, puttu-kadala, idiyappam, parotta, chappathi
and a variety of Kerala’s famous snacks are shipped
from Kochi in frozen form and made available in Indian
stores in most parts of the United States and parts
of Europe. They come under various brands like Kairali,
Wayanad, Instant Delight and Daily Delight.
“We have about 100 such eatables.
We even send Neyyappam (a ghee-fried sweet), Elayada
(steamcooked rice cake with jaggery-coconut filling),
Chakka ada (made from jackfruit), paalappam, payasam
and of course all the dry chips made from tapioca, banana
and jackfruit,’’ says Mr Cyriac
Joseph of Economic Food Solutions which has
two plants based in Kalamassery in Kochi for processing
the delicacies. EFS ships many containers a month.
